“A harmless man is not a good man. A good man is a very dangerous man who has that under voluntary control.” ~ Jordan B Peterson
Some thoughts on Jordan Peterson’s thought provoking quote. A safe, harmless man, is not necessarily a “good” man. First, one has to define “good.” But either way, a so called “harmless” man does not equate to a good man, it may simply be that he is too scared to do bad.
Now of course, we would prefer that no one does anything bad, but that does not make them good. The reason this needs to be distinguished is because a “good” man is a man who can stand up and stand out if the time calls for it. But to the contrary, a harmless man will most likely tuck his tail and run in the midst of adversity.
This relates to what is known as sins of commission and sins of omission.
• Sins of commission: when we do something that we should not do.
• Sins of omission: when we don’t do something that we should.
So a harmless man may never step up to the call of manhood and not act when he should. And that is not “good.” In fact, it would be weak and therefore a bad thing.
