Steven Covey, in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, has said:
I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.
If we all look at our lives right now, with a few exceptions, what we see has been a product of our decisions. Our lives are always moving in the direction of our strongest thoughts (Craig Groeschel). Categorically, it can look like this:
In health, we have more muscle than fat or more fat than muscle because of what we choose to eat and how much we move.
In wealth, we have the amount of money that we choose to save, invest and spend. Sure, some careers pay more than others, but if you only have one source of income, then that is a choice you have made as well.
In love, we are either married, single or divorced based on our choices. Some things may be out of our control, but broadly speaking, we have the relationships we want, either consciously or subconsciously.
In Happiness, we can focus on gratitude or complaining. We can learn new skills and develop new hobbies, or we can sit around and watch tv all day. Our happiness is our choice 90% of the time.
The great thing about this quote is that we have far more control in our life than we think. In fact, Champions have an internal locus of control and dictate the path of their lives. Losers have an external locus of control and let life dictate their path.
As John Milton said in Paradise Lost:
“The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.”
So choose wisely today, and allow your mind become a roadmap for the future, instead of simply a record of the past (Joe Dispenza).
